The Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) was set up by the government in order to compensate the victims of accidents in circumstances where the person responsible happens to be untraceable or uninsured. Every Insurer underwriting compulsory motor insurance is obliged, by virtue of the Road Traffic Act 1988, to be a member of MIB and to contribute to its funding.

Reputable motor insurance providers should be a member of the Financial Services Association, check their register at to see whether your insurer is registered and regulated by the FSA.

The AA (Automobile Association) provides motoring advice and services including information about motor insurance. Check out their website at
